A physical automatic numbering stamp is a small machine with banded wheels that advance on each impression. They jam, they can be wound backwards, and they only ever number what one person stamps at one desk.

Questions
Does it work like a physical automatic numbering machine?
The behaviour is the same, one number per impression, advancing on its own. The differences are that it cannot be reversed and that several people can share one sequence.
Can I have repeats, like a stamp that prints the same number twice?
Not from the counter. If you need two copies bearing the same number, download once and use the file twice.
What is the maximum number?
Far beyond anything a stamping workflow reaches. The padding width is what you choose; the counter itself is not the limit.
