A rubber stamp is a good object badly matched to most of the work it now gets given. It was designed for a desk with paper on it, and it is still the fastest thing in the world for that. The trouble is that the paper mostly stopped arriving. What arrives is a PDF, and marking a PDF with a rubber stamp means printing it, pressing the block, scanning it back in, and filing a photograph of a document you already had in better condition.

What is the best alternative to a rubber stamp?
For a document that stays a file, a digital stamp: the same layout as a transparent image you place on the PDF, Word or Excel file directly. For a document that has to be marked on paper somebody is holding, there is no alternative worth having and you should buy a self-inking block. Which one you need is decided entirely by where the paperwork ends up, and nothing else.
What does a rubber stamp still do better?
Paper in front of you, at speed. A front desk logging deliveries, a clinic reception, a passport queue, a delivery book signed at the door: a block is faster than any file and needs no device. It also works when the power is out, which is not a small point in a lot of places. Nothing on this page is an argument against owning one for that job.
How much does replacing a rubber stamp actually save?
The first stamp is not where the money is. A block is ordered once and then re-ordered every time the wording changes, and wording changes more often than people expect: a moved office, a new phone number, a new registration, a director who left. Designing here is free, a download is paid once rather than monthly, and editing the wording afterwards costs nothing. The saving is the fourth stamp you did not have to order, plus the days you did not wait for it.
Will it look like a real stamp?
That is a setting rather than a limitation. There is an aging control that decides how pressed the impression looks, from a clean solid mark to one with the ink breaks and edge wear of a block that has been used for years. Some people want the worn look because it matches the rest of their paperwork, and some want it clean because a crisp mark reads as deliberate. Both are one slider apart.
Can I still get a physical stamp made from this?
Yes. The download includes an SVG and a print-ready PDF, which are vector files at full resolution, and that is the format a stamp shop asks you to supply. Designing the layout here first and checking it at true size is worth doing even if you are definitely ordering a block, because the usual complaint about an ordered stamp is not the quality but the wording.
What about the ink pad, the refills and the wear?
Those are the running costs nobody counts when they compare the two. A pad dries out, a die picks up fibre and starts printing filled-in letters, and a stamp that has been re-inked with the wrong ink is a stamp that smudges on every document it touches afterwards. None of that has an equivalent here, which is less exciting than it sounds and is the thing people actually notice a year in.
