Wet ink stamp: what it means and when you need one
A wet ink stamp is a physical stamp pressed onto paper in real ink, as opposed to a stamp image applied to a file. Some documents still require one. Most of the paperwork people press a stamp onto does not, and for those a digital stamp is the same mark without the printing.

Wet ink is a phrase that only exists because of what it is contrasted with. Nobody called it that until documents started being signed and stamped on screen, and now it is the term a registry, a bank or a counterparty uses when they want the paper itself, marked in ink, in their hands. The question worth answering is not what it means, which takes a sentence. It is whether the document in front of you is actually one of the ones that needs it, because the honest answer for most business paperwork is no, and the habit outlives the requirement by years.
What you get
- Wet ink means ink that was physically applied to paper: a rubber, self-inking or pre-inked block pressed by hand.
- A wet signature is the same idea for a name rather than a mark, and the two requirements usually travel together.
- Where it is genuinely required, it is required by the body receiving the document, not by any general rule.
- Registries, land offices, some banks and some courts still ask for it. Suppliers, clients and internal approvals almost never do.
- The requirement is normally on the whole document, so a wet ink stamp on a printed copy of a file you signed on screen satisfies nobody.
- Where it is not required, a digital stamp carries things ink cannot: a date resolved as you apply it, and a serial that cannot repeat.
How to make it

Questions
What does wet ink stamp actually mean?
Ink that went onto paper. A wet ink stamp is a rubber, self-inking or pre-inked block that somebody pressed by hand onto a physical sheet, and the phrase exists to distinguish it from a stamp image placed on a PDF or a Word file. Some people also say wet stamp, wet seal or original ink, and all four mean the same thing.
How do I know whether my document needs wet ink?
Ask whoever is going to receive it, and ask in those words. This is not a question with a general answer: it is set by the registry, bank, court or counterparty at the other end, it differs sharply between countries and between document types within one country, and it changes. A supplier invoice and a land transfer are not governed by the same expectation. If somebody has told you the document needs wet ink, take that at face value and print it.
Is a wet ink signature the same as a wet ink stamp?
They are the same principle applied to different marks, and a body that wants one usually wants both. A wet signature is a name written by hand in ink. A wet ink stamp is a block pressed in ink. Where a form asks for a signature and a company stamp in original ink, sending a printed copy of a file that carries images of both is the thing most likely to come back.
Can I print a digital stamp and call it wet ink?
No, and it is worth being direct about why. A printed image of a stamp is toner, not ink, and the point of a wet ink requirement is that the marks were made on that physical sheet. Anybody who checks will see it. If the requirement is real, use a real block on the real paper. If nobody has stated the requirement, the printing step is one you invented.
Then when is a digital stamp the better answer?
When the document lives and dies as a file, which covers most business paperwork: invoices, quotations, delivery notes, purchase orders, internal approvals, letters sent as attachments, forms returned by email. Printing a PDF so you can stamp it and scan it back in makes a worse copy of a document you already had, and the scan is what the other side ends up filing.
Does a digital stamp count as legally binding?
That is not a question about the stamp. What binds a document is the agreement and the authority of the person who issued it, and a stamp of either kind is evidence about who issued it rather than the thing that makes it valid. Acceptance of an applied stamp varies by jurisdiction and by document, and this page describes common commercial practice rather than giving legal advice. Check the requirement with the body receiving the document, and take advice on anything that matters.
Is it legal to make my own company stamp?
Making a mark for an organisation you are entitled to represent is ordinary, and in most places a company stamp is not registered with anyone. What is not ordinary is applying a mark you are not entitled to use: another company’s seal, a professional credential you do not hold, or a notarial mark. That is forgery whether the stamp is rubber or a file, and the material it is made from makes no difference to it.
Estamplab is a design tool. This page describes common commercial practice rather than giving legal, tax or financial advice, and practice changes. Where a specific document matters, check the requirement with the body receiving it. Only produce a mark your own organisation or your own credentials are entitled to use.
