Most stamps on this site exist to prove something. A marking stamp exists to save a teacher forty minutes, which is a different design problem: nobody is going to audit it, so the only question is whether it does the job faster than writing.

The set that gets used

The seen mark. Name and date. It says the work was looked at, which is what most marking policies actually require on most pieces of work.

The feedback mark. A small frame with tick boxes or prompts: presentation, working shown, next step. It turns a blank margin into a form, and the pupil knows where to look.

The praise mark. Short, and better without a picture for anybody over about nine. "Excellent working" beats a smiling star in year eight.

The redo mark. The one people leave out and then write by hand two hundred times. A stamp saying what to do next is more useful than one saying the work was wrong.

The teacher identity mark. Name and class, for anything leaving the room: reports, notes home, permission slips. See the teacher stamp.

What goes on a teacher stamp

Very little. A name, sometimes a class or a subject, and a date field. Resist adding the school crest to a marking stamp: it makes the mark bigger, slower to press, and it borrows the school's authority for a comment about long division.

The crest belongs on the school's own marks, which are a different set. Those are covered in school and principal stamps.

Size and ink

Small. A marking stamp at 56mm eats the margin it is meant to sit in, and at that size the impression takes real pressure. Around 25 to 38mm across is the working range, and a rectangle beats a circle because exercise book margins are tall and narrow.

Ink: anything that does not bleed through thin exercise book paper. A dye pad on 70gsm paper will show on the reverse and land in the middle of the next page of work.

The digital half

Work handed in through a school platform is a file, and a marking stamp as a transparent PNG drops onto a PDF or a document the same way the rubber one lands on paper. For a set used across a department, one shared file beats eight stamps in eight drawers.

The honest limits

Estamplab is a design tool. This page describes common practice rather than giving educational or legal advice, and what a school may certify or attest is set by the authority the school is registered with, so check the requirement with them.

A marking stamp records a teacher's comment. It is not an attestation, and it should not be designed to look like one. Only produce a mark you or your school are entitled to use.

The rest of the range is on the stamp and seal directory.
