Wax and foil seals: when a seal is meant to be felt

Wax and foil are what people picture when they hear the word seal, and both are doing something no ink mark does: making the document a physical object that is awkward to reproduce. Both also share one weakness, and it is the same one.

Wax
A matrix pressed into molten wax. It is slow, roughly a minute per envelope once you count melting and setting, and it does not survive a letter box unless the envelope is padded.
Where it earns its place: wedding stationery, formal invitations, certificates that are presented rather than posted, and anything where the recipient is meant to feel that the document was made rather than printed. See the wax seal and wedding stamps.
Design rules are stricter than for ink. Wax picks up depth rather than line, so a design that relies on fine outlines disappears. Bold shapes, a single device, deep relief, and no text smaller than about 4mm.
Foil
A metallic disc, usually self-adhesive and often embossed, applied to a certificate or an award. Faster than wax by a wide margin, flatter, and cheaper per unit at any real volume.
It is the standard for certificates of achievement, quality marks and award documents, which is why the layouts look the way they do: a ring of text, a central device, and a serrated or scalloped edge. See the gold foil seal, the silver foil seal and the gold certificate seal.
The shared weakness
Neither copies. A wax seal photographs as a dark blob and photocopies as a grey smear. A foil seal reflects, so a scan of it is a bright rectangle with nothing readable in it.
That is either the point or the problem, and which one it is depends entirely on where the document goes next. A certificate that hangs on a wall: the point. A certificate that will be scanned and emailed to an employer in another country: a problem, and the reason a printed or inked version of the same mark should exist alongside it.
The same trade-off in the embossed-versus-inked case is covered in embossed seals and inked stamps.
Getting one made
Both start from artwork, and both want a vector. Design the seal here, download the SVG or the print-ready PDF, and send that to whoever is cutting the wax matrix or making the foil die. A photograph of an existing seal is a poor starting point and the result shows it.
Design it once and you get the third version for free: the same artwork as a transparent PNG for the digital copy of the document, which is the version most people will actually see.

The honest limits
Estamplab is a design tool. This page describes common practice rather than giving legal advice, and where a document requires a particular form of seal that requirement is set by the authority or the scheme receiving it, so check the requirement with them.
A decorative seal carries no legal weight on its own. Only produce a mark you or your organisation are entitled to use.
The rest of the range is on the stamp and seal directory.
