Wedding stamps: where a seal earns its place and where it does not

A wedding stamp is one mark used across a hundred small pieces of paper, and it earns its place on exactly the pieces nobody keeps. Knowing which those are is the difference between a stamp that saves a weekend and a stamp that sits in a box.

What is worth stamping
Envelope flaps. A monogram or a date seal on the back of a hundred and twenty envelopes. This is the best use of a wedding stamp: high volume, low stakes, and it makes plain envelopes look considered.
Favour tags and boxes. Small, many, and printing them is disproportionate.
Menus and place cards, at the head. A small mark at the top of a printed card, where a full printed design would cost per card.
Thank you cards, afterwards. The mark you will still use six months later, which is the argument for buying rubber rather than borrowing one.
Order of service covers. One mark, repeated, on paper that is folded and handed out once.
What is not
The invitation itself. It is the piece guests keep, it is the piece that sets expectations, and it is the one place where printing the design is worth the money. A stamped invitation looks stamped, and on a printed suite that reads as the corner being cut.
What goes on one
Three things, and there is room for two of them.
- Initials or a monogram. Two letters, or three with the shared surname in the centre. The monogram conventions are worth two minutes of reading, because the middle letter trips almost everybody.
- The date. Often the whole design on its own, set in a ring: 14 . 06 . 2027.
- The names. Only if they are short. Two long names in ring text on a 40mm circle is illegible.
Pick two. A monogram with the date around it is the layout that works most often.
Ink, wax or foil
Ink is the practical one. One pad, a hundred and fifty impressions, no drying time to speak of on uncoated stock.
Wax looks the way people imagine when they say wedding seal, and it is a genuine option here because none of it needs to be photocopied. It is slow: budget a minute per envelope and a helper. See the wax seal.
Foil is a print process rather than a stamp, though the gold foil seal and the silver foil seal layouts give you the look as a digital mark for anything screen-bound, such as the wedding website or the digital save the date.
Making one you can actually use
- Open the stamp maker and start from the wedding stamp or an events template.
- Set the initials or the date. Keep to one typeface with even stroke weight, because thin serifs disappear in ink.
- Add the ring: plain, dotted or laurel. The ring is what turns initials into a seal.
- Choose the colour. Anything you like here, with one caution: pale ink on textured paper prints as a suggestion rather than a mark.
- Download the SVG if a supplier is cutting a rubber die or a wax matrix, and the transparent PNG for anything digital.

One practical warning
Test on the actual paper before you order a hundred and twenty envelopes. Uncoated cotton stock drinks ink and fattens every stroke; coated stock resists it and smears if it is handled early. A design that is fine on printer paper can close up completely on the envelope you have chosen, and the fix is a slightly heavier line weight rather than a different design.
Everything else we make, decorative and otherwise, is on the stamp and seal directory.
