Engineer and architect seals: what the board decides and what you choose

Engineers and architects do not stamp a drawing. They seal it, and the verb matters, because sealing is an act with consequences attached rather than a mark of tidiness. Almost everything about the layout follows from that.

Why it is a seal and not a stamp
A licensed professional seal says that a named, licensed person takes responsibility for the technical content of the document it appears on. It is closer to a signature than to an office mark, which is why in most jurisdictions the seal is meaningless without the signature and the date beside it.
That is also why the word is fixed. Search for "engineer stamp" and you will find plenty of results, because that is what people type. The profession says seal, boards say seal, and the drawing sheet has a box on it labelled seal.
What a professional seal carries
The layout is usually specified by the licensing board or council, and it is not a design decision. Typically:
- The word denoting the licence: PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER, REGISTERED ARCHITECT, CHARTERED ENGINEER, or the local equivalent.
- The licensed person's name, exactly as licensed.
- The licence, registration or certificate number.
- The jurisdiction: the state, province, council or board.
- Sometimes the discipline: civil, structural, mechanical, electrical.
The centre of the seal is often reserved by the board for its own device, and its diameter is sometimes specified too. Where your board publishes a specification, that specification wins over anything on this page.
What sealing a drawing commits you to
This is the part worth being blunt about. Applying a professional seal is a statement that the work was prepared by you or under your responsible charge. Sealing a drawing you did not supervise is a licensing offence in most jurisdictions, and it is the offence boards discipline most often.
Practical consequences that follow:
- The seal goes on the sheets you are responsible for, not the whole set as a courtesy.
- It sits with a signature and a date, because the seal identifies the person and the signature identifies the act.
- A sealed sheet that is later revised needs re-sealing, which is why sealing early in a revision cycle causes trouble.
The digital version
Most drawings are issued as PDFs, and the seal has to reach them. Printing a set, sealing it by hand and scanning it back loses line quality on exactly the documents where line quality is the content.
A seal applied to the PDF directly keeps the sheet vector-sharp. Where a jurisdiction accepts a digitally applied seal, it usually attaches conditions about the signature that accompanies it, and those conditions come from the board rather than from the tool. The add a seal to a PDF page covers the mechanics.
For the drawing review marks that sit alongside a seal, rather than replacing it, see the submittal stamp maker and the drawing approval stamp.

Architects, and where they differ
An architect's seal does the same job with different wording and, in several jurisdictions, a different shape convention. The other difference is practical: architects seal drawing sets that run to hundreds of sheets, so the mechanics of applying the seal at volume matter more than the design of it.
The architect stamp maker and the architect seal pages hold the layouts. Surveyors are a third case with its own conventions, covered in land surveyor seals.
The honest limits
Estamplab is a design tool. It does not verify a licence, and it cannot: a seal made here carries exactly the authority the person applying it already holds. Only produce a seal for a licence issued to you, build it to your own board's published specification, and check with the board whether a digitally applied seal is accepted for the submission in front of you.
The rest of the professional family is on the stamp and seal directory.
