Address stamps: the one stamp worth owning in rubber

Almost every argument on this site ends with the document being a file, and the digital mark winning. The address stamp is the exception, and it is worth saying so plainly: if you are addressing envelopes, a rubber address stamp beats every alternative, because the thing you are marking is paper and always will be.

What goes on one
Three or four lines, and the discipline is in what you leave out.

That is a complete business address stamp. It does not need the phone number, it does not need the website, and it certainly does not need a tagline. An envelope corner is read in half a second by a sorting machine and a postal worker, and every extra line makes the address itself smaller.
A return address stamp can be smaller still: name and postcode will get a returned item back to you.
Laying out three lines so they read
- One type size, or two at most. The name can be bolder than the address. Three sizes on a stamp this small looks like a leaflet.
- Left aligned. Centred addresses look decorative and read slower.
- A rectangle, not a circle. An address is lines of text, and ring text makes a postcode hard to find. The rectangle stamp is the shape for this.
- 56 by 22mm, roughly. Bigger than that and it crowds an envelope; smaller and the postcode stops being legible after a few hundred impressions.
The utility templates hold the address layouts, including a framed one and a PO box version.
The versions people actually ask for
- Business address stamp. Name, street, town, postcode. Goes on envelopes, packaging and the back of invoices. See the address stamp.
- Return address stamp. Shorter, for the corner of an envelope. See the return address stamp.
- PO box stamp. The box number is the whole address, so the layout has room to be larger and clearer.
- Address and logo. The mark doubles as branding on packaging. Worth knowing that a logo has to survive being one ink colour at this size.
- Monogram address seal. The decorative version, for correspondence rather than parcels. See monogram stamps.
When the digital file is the one you want
Two cases, both common.
On documents rather than envelopes. An address block on a letterhead, a quote or an invoice is part of the document, and pasting a transparent PNG is cleaner than printing and stamping. Nothing about that job wants rubber.
Getting the rubber one made. A stamp supplier needs artwork. Designing it here and downloading the SVG or the print-ready PDF gives them a vector to cut from, which is a better starting point than a photograph of your letterhead and a hope.

The mistakes worth avoiding
Putting a phone number on it. Numbers change and stamps do not. The stamp outlives the number and then quietly misdirects people.
Setting it too small to be legible. The address stamp gets used more times than anything else in the drawer, and a worn small stamp is unreadable long before a worn large one.
Using a script typeface. It looks charming on screen and turns into a smudge at 8pt in ink on a textured envelope.
Forgetting the country. If anything you send goes abroad, the country line is not optional, and adding it later means a new stamp.
