Confidential and draft stamps: marks that change how a document is treated

These two marks exist to change how somebody treats a document before they have read it. That makes them the only stamps where placement matters more than wording, and where getting the placement wrong defeats the whole thing.

Draft
A DRAFT mark has one job: make it impossible to mistake this version for the final one. Which means it cannot sit in a corner. It goes across the page, large, angled, behind the text, because the failure mode is somebody printing page four, losing the cover sheet, and quoting the draft numbers in a meeting.
Pale enough to read through, dark enough to see at a glance. Around fifteen per cent grey or a light red is the working range. See the draft stamp and the draft watermark stamp generator.
The related marks are the same shape of problem: SAMPLE, SPECIMEN, VOID, SUPERSEDED. See the specimen stamp and the void stamp.
Confidential
A CONFIDENTIAL mark is an instruction to the reader about handling. Unlike DRAFT, it is usually better in a corner or a header, because the person reading it does need to read the text, and a heavy diagonal across a contract is the reason people ask for a clean copy.
Where it earns a diagonal is a document that will be photographed or forwarded, because a corner mark crops out and a diagonal does not.
Useful additions, depending on the organisation: a recipient name, so a leaked copy points somewhere, and a classification word your own policy uses rather than a generic one. See the confidential stamp and the confidential watermark on a PDF.
What these marks do not do
This is the important part, and it is where people over-rely on them.
A CONFIDENTIAL stamp does not restrict anything. It does not encrypt the file, it does not stop a forward, and it does not create a legal obligation on somebody who never agreed to one. What it does is remove the excuse of not knowing, which matters, and it is the only thing it does.
A DRAFT mark does not stop a draft being relied on. It makes reliance obviously unreasonable, which is a different and weaker thing.
If a document genuinely must not be read by the wrong person, the answer is access control on the file, and the mark is the label on top of it.
Marking a whole file at once
A twelve page report needs the mark on twelve pages, because pages get separated. Doing that by hand is the reason it does not get done, so applying the mark across every page in one pass is what makes the practice stick.

The honest limits
Estamplab is a design tool. This page describes common commercial practice rather than giving legal advice, and what a marking obliges anybody to do differs by jurisdiction and by contract, so take advice on anything that matters.
Only produce a mark your own organisation is entitled to use.
The rest of the range is on the stamp and seal directory.
