Gift stamp

Printed packaging has a minimum order of a thousand units and a lead time. A small maker sending forty orders a month cannot use it, and buying branded boxes destroys the margin on the thing inside them.

A stamp is how small-batch things get made to look made. Plain kraft boxes, plain tissue, plain tags, plain ribbon, all of it turned into yours one press at a time, with no minimum order and nothing sitting in a cupboard unused.

What a gift stamp actually goes on

Kraft boxes and mailers. The classic use, and the one that changes an order from a parcel into a package.

Tissue paper and wrap. A repeated small mark across plain tissue costs almost nothing and photographs well, which matters when customers post what they receive.

Ribbon and twill tape. A stamped ribbon is a real thing people search for, and it works if the stamp is small, the design is bold and the ink is one made for fabric.

Swing tags and thank-you cards. Where a monogram or a short message belongs.

Jars, labels and bags. For anybody selling food, candles or soap, where the label is regulated and the decoration is not.

Corporate gifts. The one businesses ask about in November. A company mark on the box, the card and the ribbon of a Christmas or client gift turns an ordinary present into something that says who it is from, which is the whole point of a corporate gift.

What to put on it

Less than you think. A gift stamp is pressed at 30mm to 50mm onto textured, absorbent material, and the material eats detail.

What survives: a monogram, a short business name in a bold face, a simple outline shape, a laurel or wreath, a very simple icon. What does not: fine script, thin serifs, a strapline, a phone number, a detailed illustration, anything with hairlines.

The test is to look at the design on screen at the actual size it will be pressed, not zoomed in. If it does not read at 35mm on a screen, it will not read on brown kraft.

The one thing to get right: ink

This is where most gift stamping goes wrong, and it has nothing to do with the design.

Ordinary office ink is made for absorbent white paper. On brown kraft it goes dull, on coated card it sits on the surface and smears, and on ribbon it never dries. If you are stamping anything other than plain paper you want an ink made for the material: a pigment ink for kraft, a solvent or fabric ink for ribbon and non-porous surfaces, and in some cases heat setting.

Test on the actual material before you stamp two hundred of anything. Everybody learns this once.

Where this tool fits, honestly

For gift and packaging work you probably want a physical stamp, because you are pressing onto boxes and ribbon rather than onto PDFs. So use this the way a designer would: build the design here, free, at real size, and look at it properly. Change it as many times as you like. Then download the vector SVG and hand it to a stamp shop, because vector artwork is exactly what they ask for and what they otherwise charge a design fee to produce.

Where the file is the finished article: the digital side of the same brand. The thank-you email, the PDF invoice in the box, the receipt, the social image. Those get the transparent PNG, and they match the physical stamp exactly because both came from one design.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a packaging or gift stamp be?

Between 30mm and 50mm for boxes and tissue, smaller for tags and ribbon. Design it at the size it will be pressed and judge it there, because a design that looks refined at screen size loses its fine detail entirely on kraft.

Can I stamp on ribbon?

Yes, with the right ink. Ordinary office ink will not dry properly on ribbon or on anything non-porous. Use a fabric or solvent ink, keep the design bold and small, and test on an offcut before you commit to a roll.

What makes a good corporate gift stamp?

Restraint. The company mark, or a monogram, and nothing else. A corporate gift stamp is going onto a box and a card that already carry a message, and its job is to say who this is from at a glance, not to reproduce the letterhead.

Should I buy a physical stamp for this?

For boxes, ribbon and tissue, yes. Design it here at no cost, take the vector file to a stamp shop, and you skip the design fee most of them charge. Keep the digital version for the invoice, the receipt and the email so the whole thing matches.

Can one design work across boxes, tags and ribbon?

That is the argument for a simple one. A bold monogram works at 45mm on a box and at 20mm on a tag. A detailed logo works at neither.
