How to get a clean stamp impression every time

A stamp that prints faint on one side, doubles at the edge or smears across the page is not usually a bad stamp. It is one of five things, and four of them take a minute to fix.

Open the stamp maker and start from any of these

1. The pad

Most faint impressions are a dry pad. A pad that looks inked can still be dry in the middle where the stamp lands most often.

Re-ink it with the same ink type it came with, a few drops spread across the surface, then leave it face down overnight so the ink distributes. Re-inking and using it immediately gives you a wet patch and a dry ring.

Never mix ink types. Dye ink on a pigment pad, or the reverse, makes a sticky mess that dries badly and never quite prints again.

2. The pressure

The two failures pull in opposite directions.

Too little gives a faint impression, usually weakest in the middle of a round seal, because the die flexes and the centre does not meet the paper.

Too much squeezes ink out sideways and thickens every line, which closes up small counters and turns a registration number into a smudge.

The technique that works: press straight down, hold for about a second, lift straight up. No rocking, no wiggling. Rocking is what produces the doubled edge that looks like the stamp printed twice.

3. The surface

A stamp needs a firm flat surface under the paper. Stamping on a stack of paper gives a soft bed, the sheet dents, and the impression is uneven.

Put a hard surface under the sheet, or at most a single sheet of backing. Glossy and coated stock resists ink and needs a pigment ink and longer to dry. Textured and recycled paper needs more pressure and a heavier design.

4. The design

Some impressions cannot be saved by technique. Strokes under about 0.4mm break up, detail under 1mm fills in, and a design with a lot of solid area needs more ink than a pad can give in one press.

If a stamp has never printed cleanly, the design is the suspect rather than the method. See stamp shapes and sizes for what survives at stamp size.

5. Cleaning

Ink builds up in the recesses of a die and the design gradually fills in. It happens slowly enough that people blame the stamp.

Clean it with a damp cloth for water-based inks, or a stamp cleaner for pigment and solvent inks. Blot dry, face up. Do not soak a mounted stamp: water gets between the die and the mount and lifts the adhesive.

Store it face down on its pad if it is self-inking, and face up if it is not, away from sunlight and heat. Rubber perishes.

The failure that is not fixable

A worn die. After enough impressions the raised surface rounds off, and a rounded edge prints a fat, soft line no matter what you do. The first thing to go is usually the smallest text, which is usually the registration or licence number, which is the part somebody actually needs to read.

At that point it is a new stamp. That is also the point at which it is worth asking whether the document was ever going to be paper: if it arrives and leaves as a PDF, applying the mark to the file removes the pad, the pressure and the wear in one go.
