How rubber stamps are actually made: vulcanising, photopolymer and lasers

Most people order a rubber stamp without ever knowing how the die was made, which is fine right up to the point where the impression comes back softer than the artwork. The three common methods have different limits on detail, and the file you send matters differently to each of them. This is what happens between your design and the rubber.
1. Vulcanising
The traditional method, and still in use because it is cheap at volume and the dies last.
A negative of the design is made first, usually as an engraved matrix in a plastic or resin board. Raw gum rubber is then pressed against that matrix in a heated press, typically for several minutes at a few hundred degrees. The heat and pressure cure the rubber into the shape of the matrix. Cured rubber comes out as a sheet with the design raised on it, and the individual dies are cut out and mounted.
What it holds: solid shapes, clean text down to a reasonable size, simple borders. Very fine hairlines and small serif type start to fill in, because the rubber flows slightly under pressure.
Lead time: longest of the three, because the matrix has to be made before the rubber.
Where you meet it: high-volume orders, and older stamp shops that have had the press for thirty years.
2. Photopolymer
A liquid or sheet polymer that hardens where light hits it.
A film negative of the artwork is laid over the polymer and exposed to UV. The exposed areas cure solid; the unexposed areas stay liquid or soft and are washed out, leaving the design standing proud. The die is then post-cured and mounted.
What it holds: considerably finer detail than vulcanised rubber, because nothing is being pressed into anything. Small type, thin rules and detailed logos survive.
Lead time: fast. Exposure and wash-out are minutes, not hours.
The catch: photopolymer is less durable than vulcanised rubber and less resistant to aggressive inks and solvents. For an office stamp used a few times a day, that difference never arrives. For an industrial marking application it does.
3. Laser engraving
A CO2 laser burns the non-printing areas away from a rubber sheet directly. No matrix, no film, no chemistry.
What it holds: the finest detail of the three, and the shoulder angle of the cut can be controlled, which matters because a die with steep shoulders prints cleanly and one with shallow shoulders picks up ink where it should not.
Lead time: shortest. The file goes to the laser and the die comes off it.
Where you meet it: most modern one-off custom stamps, and anything ordered online with a fast turnaround.
Flash and pre-inked dies
A fourth process, and the one that produces a pre-inked stamp rather than a conventional die.
A highly porous material is exposed to a flash of intense light through a negative. The heat seals the surface everywhere except where the design is, leaving the design area open and porous. Ink is then loaded into the body of the die and weeps out through those open areas as you press. There is no pad and no raised rubber in the usual sense.
That is why pre-inked stamps hold such fine detail, and why you cannot change their ink colour: the colour is inside the die.
What this means for your artwork
Every one of these methods works from a negative or a path, and all of them want the same thing from you: vector artwork, not a photograph of a stamp.
A vector file describes the design as shapes and outlines, so it can be scaled to the die size without softening, and the laser or the film plotter can follow the outlines directly. A raster file (a PNG, a JPG, a screenshot) describes it as pixels, and at die size those pixels become visible steps on every curve.
This is why the SVG download exists. If you are sending a design to a physical stamp maker, send the SVG. If they ask for a PDF, that works too, as long as it was made from vector rather than by placing an image. If all you can send is a PNG, send the largest one you have and expect the fine lines to soften.

Design rules that come from the manufacturing
Three constraints on your layout follow directly from how the die gets made, and none of them are aesthetic preferences.
Keep strokes above a minimum weight. A hairline that looks elegant on screen either fills in (vulcanised) or snaps off the die in use (any method). Rules of about 0.25mm at final size are a sensible floor.
Do not crowd the die. Ink spreads slightly on paper regardless of method. Elements packed tightly together bridge into each other after a few hundred impressions and the impression blotches. Space is not wasted on a stamp, it is what keeps the mark legible.
Mind the smallest text. Registration numbers and licence numbers are the lines people set smallest and need most. Preview at actual size, not at screen size. If it is not comfortably readable at 38mm, it will not be readable in ink.

And the case for not ordering a die at all
None of the above applies if the stamp never becomes physical.
A digital stamp has no die, no lead time and no minimum stroke weight, because it is not being pressed into anything. It is edited rather than reordered when the address changes, it is the same on every machine, and it costs nothing to keep six variants of. On documents that are sent as files, which is now most of them, it is also the only version anybody ever sees.
Where you do need the physical stamp, design the artwork here first, preview it at size, and send the vector to the maker. You will get a better die from a better file, and you will have the digital version for everything that stays on screen. That transition is the subject of why stamps went digital.

Vulcanised natural or synthetic gum rubber for traditional dies, photopolymer resin for exposed dies, laser-grade rubber sheet for engraved ones, and a sealed porous material for pre-inked stamps.
How long does it take to make a rubber stamp?
Laser engraving is same-day work in a shop that has the machine. Photopolymer is hours. Vulcanising is longer because the matrix comes first. Add shipping to all three. A digital stamp is minutes, which is the actual comparison.
Can I make a rubber stamp at home?
Hand-carving a lino or eraser block gives a real, usable stamp for craft work, and it is genuinely satisfying. It will not hold the fine detail a business mark needs, and a hand-carved registration number is not going to read. For anything official, design it properly and either send the vector to a maker or use the digital file.
What file should I send to a stamp maker?
An SVG, or a vector PDF. Both scale to the die without softening. A transparent PNG is the file for documents, not for die-cutting.
Why does my stamp print blurry?
Usually too much ink rather than a bad die: an over-inked pad floods the shoulders of the design. After that, a crowded design bridging between elements, or a die that needs cleaning. A genuinely worn die is the least likely cause on an office stamp.
