How to choose a stamp maker: eleven questions before you pay

Every stamp maker looks the same on the landing page and different at the moment you have paid. These are the questions worth answering first. Some of ours are good answers and some are not, and the ones that are not are marked.

1. Can you see the finished thing before you pay?
Some tools watermark the preview so heavily you cannot judge the design, then take payment for the clean file. You are buying the one thing you have not been allowed to look at.

2. What formats do you get, and for how much?
A PNG alone is not enough. You want a transparent PNG for documents, an SVG or a print-ready PDF for anybody cutting a die, and Word if the mark goes into Word templates. Check whether the price is per format or for all of them.

3. Is the background actually transparent?
The most common complaint after buying a stamp file is a white box around it on the document. That is a file saved without transparency, and no amount of resizing fixes it. See transparent stamp PNG.
4. Can you edit it after you have paid?
Addresses change and registration numbers get typed wrong. Some tools treat a purchase as final and a correction as a new purchase.
Ours: a saved stamp on a plan can be reopened and changed. A single pay as you go download is the file as it was at that moment, which is the honest limitation of paying once.
5. Does the date fill itself in?
If the mark carries a date, either the tool resolves it on use or somebody types it every time and eventually gets it wrong. This is the single most common fault on a physical dater too. See why your date stamp shows the wrong date.
6. Can a serial number repeat?
If the mark carries a reference, ask what stops the same number being issued twice. A counter that resets, or one you set by hand, will repeat. See numbering stamps.
7. Will your logo survive?
Ask whether the tool takes the white background out of an uploaded logo and whether it handles one colour properly. A logo drawn for a screen usually needs work before it prints as ink. See art and logo stamps.
8. Does it set your script correctly?
If the mark carries Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai or Cyrillic, check that curved ring text joins and shapes correctly rather than setting each character separately. Plenty of tools fail this and it is not visible until you look closely.
9. Who owns the design?
Read the terms. Some tools license the output rather than transferring it, which matters if the mark becomes part of your branding. Ours is yours to use commercially once you have bought it.
10. What happens if it is wrong?
Ask what the refund position is on a file that has already been downloaded, because a downloaded file cannot be returned. A stated policy is worth more than a promise. Ours is on the refund policy page.
11. Is a digital stamp even the right answer?
The question most stamp maker pages will not ask. If the mark goes on envelopes, or a counter stamps paper in front of customers, a rubber stamp is the better tool and we will say so. See where to make a custom stamp.
The three that matter most
If you only check three: can you see it before paying, do you get a vector as well as a PNG, and can you fix a typo afterwards. Those three account for most of the regret people describe after buying a stamp online.
