Banks, lenders, title companies and counterparties ask US businesses for a seal constantly, and almost always at short notice. Here is what each of the three marks American businesses actually use has to carry, and what you can make in about two minutes.

Almost no state requires a corporation or an LLC to have a seal. That gap between what the law compels and what people ask for is the entire reason most American businesses own one.
The three marks American businesses actually use
The corporate or LLC seal
Carries the company name exactly as filed, including the suffix as filed, the state of formation, and usually the year. The name is the line people verify against the Secretary of State's register, so it is the line to get right and the line to set largest.
Corporate seals stopped being a formal requirement long ago in nearly every state. What keeps them in circulation is that a bank or a title company asks. There is an LLC seal page and a corporate stamp page for the two forms.
The notary stamp
The one case where the contents are prescribed rather than chosen, and where getting it wrong gets a document rejected. Notary commissions are state-level, and the requirements differ sharply between states: the name as commissioned, the words Notary Public, the county or state, the commission number, and often the expiry.
Read your own commission paperwork before ordering, because no tool can tell you what your state requires. What we can do is hold the layout: notary stamp templates, and the notary stamp guide for what usually goes on one.
Several states that require an embosser also expect an inked mark beside it, for the simple reason that an embossed impression is invisible on a scan. That is covered on the notary seal embosser page.
The return address stamp
The highest-volume mark on any American desk and the least glamorous. Name, street, city, state, ZIP, in straight stacked lines. It goes on envelopes, packages, forms and packing slips, and what it saves is not time on any one item but the accumulation across a week of mailing. Return address stamp.

Professional seals
Engineers, architects, surveyors and accountants are licensed by state boards, and several boards now specify how a digital seal must be applied and secured. The licence number is the line that matters and the one most often set too small. There are pages for the professional engineer seal, the CPA seal and architects. Check your board's rules before sealing anything: the requirement is specific and local, and we are a design tool rather than a compliance one.
What separates a usable stamp file from a bad one
Four things, and all four are invisible until you put the file on a document:
- A real transparent PNG, so the mark does not land as a white box over the text. A JPG cannot do this, whatever the seller says.
- A real vector SVG, if the design is ever going to a shop to be cut into rubber.
- A date that fills itself in, and stays editable in the Word download rather than being baked into the picture.
- A serial number that increments, so an approval or a certificate can be tied to one document rather than being one of an indistinguishable set.

Self-inking, pre-inked, or neither
Self-inking is the default American office stamp: a die and a pad in a spring housing, roughly 5,000 to 10,000 impressions before re-inking. Pre-inked gives a sharper impression and 20,000 to 50,000, and costs more. Self-inking vs pre-inked stamps compares them.
Neither matters if the document is a PDF, which most now are. Design it here, download the transparent PNG, and place it. If you also want the physical stamp, take the SVG to a stamp shop.
What it costs
Free to design, no account, no watermark on the preview. $1.50 for one image format or $3.00 for every format zipped, paid once. No subscription. Pricing has the detail.
Common questions
Does an LLC need a seal?
In almost every state, no. Corporate and LLC seals are convention rather than requirement. Most LLCs that have one got it because a bank or a title company asked.
What goes on a corporate seal?
The company name exactly as filed with the suffix as filed, the state of formation, and usually the year of incorporation. Keep the name legible: it is what anybody checking will look at.
Can a notary use a digital stamp in the US?
That is set by the commissioning state and the answer differs sharply between them. Many now permit some form of electronic or remote online notarization with detailed requirements about the mark and the certificate. Check your own commission before relying on a digital mark for a notarial act.
Is it legal to make my own company stamp?
Yes, for your own company's name. What is not legal anywhere is a mark impersonating another organization, a government body, or a professional whose credentials you do not hold. How to spot a fake stamp covers that line from the other side.
Where can I make a custom rubber stamp online?
Design it here free and download it, or take the SVG to a local shop for a physical die. The US company stamp page has the local conventions, and Canada has its own.
