Mauritius runs on two languages and one habit: the stamp at the bottom of the page. A quotation from a Port Louis supplier, a receipt from a shop in Curepipe, a school certificate, a customs entry at the freeport. None of them are required by law to carry a stamp, and nearly all of them do. This guide covers every kind of stamp and seal used on the island, what belongs on each, and how to make one in the browser, with templates you can open and edit as you read.

The company seal under the Companies Act 2001
Start with the fact that saves money: a Mauritian company is not obliged to have a common seal for ordinary dealings with third parties. The requirement people remember comes from elsewhere. Global business companies often keep one because a counterparty in another country asks for a sealed document, and that is a demand from the other jurisdiction rather than from Mauritius.
So the practical question is not whether the law forces you to own a seal. It is what your bank, your customer and your registrar expect to see, and the answer is almost always a clear stamp carrying:
- the company name exactly as incorporated, with Ltd or Ltée,
- the Business Registration Number, the BRN, which is the line anyone can check,
- the registered office address,
- a phone number or email if the space allows.

English, French, or both
Mauritian business documents move between English and French all day, and plenty of firms cut a stamp that carries both: the trading name in English on the top arc and the address in French below, or two straight lines in a rectangle. Creole appears on signage rather than on seals.
If your stamp needs to sit on documents that travel to Réunion, Madagascar or France, a bilingual rectangle usually reads better than a bilingual circle, because a ring closes the letter spacing on longer French words.

Stamps by sector
- Notary. Property transfer in Mauritius runs through a notaire, and notarial marks are governed by the profession rather than by preference. Our notary templates are a graphic starting point only; what may appear on such a mark is set by the authority that requires it.
- Attorney and law firm. Name, chambers, address. See lawyer stamps.
- Doctor, clinic and pharmacy. Name, qualification, speciality, registration with the Medical Council of Mauritius, and the clinic. This is the stamp that carries prescriptions and certificates, so it is the one with the least room for improvisation. See doctor stamp, pharmacy and veterinary.
- Accountant and auditor. Firm name, professional membership, BRN, and a free line for the filing date. See accountant stamp.
- School and college. School name, zone, and often the crest. Used on report cards, attendance letters and certificates. See school stamp and teacher stamp.
- Freight, customs and freeport. Company name, BRN, and a bold RECEIVED or CLEARED block with the date. These stamps travel with paperwork through several hands, so legibility beats decoration every time.
- Estate agency. Agency name, contact, registration where it applies. See real estate stamp.
- Hotel and tourism. Reception stamps for vouchers, excursion confirmations and guest paperwork, usually a rectangle with the property name and a date line.
One line deserves reading character by character: the number. BRN, council registration, membership number. It is the only detail the other side can verify in a minute, and it is the one that most often goes to the engraver wrong.

Types by mechanism
- Self-inking. The modern default: the pad sits inside, thousands of impressions, ink replaced in seconds.
- Wooden handle with a separate pad. Prints beautifully with a well cut die, smudges the moment somebody presses it at an angle.
- Pocket stamp. Folds shut, does not mark a bag, travels with its owner. Made for people who sign away from a desk.
- Date stamp. Day, month and year bands. The most useful type and the one that goes wrong most often: if nobody turns the band on Monday morning, Monday's document carries Friday's date.
- Numbering stamp. The number moves on by itself at every press. Essential for invoices, delivery notes, files and batch numbers.
- Embosser, or dry seal. No ink, it raises the paper. Kept for diplomas, minutes and documents meant to look like a single copy. See corporate seal embosser.
- Wax seal. Weddings, events and packaging for brands that sell craft. See wax seal templates.
The date stamp and the numbering stamp are where the digital version wins outright: the date fills itself in and the number moves on by itself, with nobody needing to remember.
The stamps used every day
- RECEIVED, with the date. The most valuable of the lot. Without a receipt date, the question of whether something arrived in time has no answer; with it, the question takes a second. See received stamp maker.
- PAID. Stops the same invoice being settled twice, a loss more common than businesses admit. See paid stamp.
- COPY and CERTIFIED TRUE COPY. They separate the original from what circulates. See certified true copy.
- CONFIDENTIAL, CANCELLED, DRAFT, URGENT. Status marks, almost always red, because here the colour is information rather than style. See red stamps.
- Signature stamp. Name, title and a line to sign on. The stamp says who; the signature commits. See signature stamp.
Why the digital version suits Mauritius
Most documents that ask for a stamp are no longer printed. An invoice in PDF, a quotation attached to an email, a form filled in on a phone at a client's office in Ebène. With a rubber stamp the route is print, stamp, scan, send back, and the file loses quality at every step. On an island where a supplier, a bank and a client can sit in three different towns, that round trip costs a day.
With a digital stamp:
- It is a transparent PNG that sits on the page like ink, not a white box over the text.
- The date fills itself in, so Monday's paperwork says Monday.
- Changing the registered office takes thirty seconds, not the price of a new die.
- It does not dry out, does not vanish into a drawer, and works at eleven at night.
- It serves the physical stamp too: download the SVG and take it to an engraver. A vector file cuts far cleaner than the photograph most people arrive with.
To stamp a file right now, the PDF tool processes the document in your browser and never uploads it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Mauritian company need a common seal?
For ordinary dealings with third parties, no seal is required by law. Global business companies commonly keep one because a counterparty abroad asks for sealed documents, which is a requirement of that other jurisdiction. If a specific document or a specific counterparty asks for a seal, check with them and with your company secretary rather than assuming.
What should a Mauritian company stamp show?
Company name as incorporated, the Business Registration Number, and the registered office address. Phone and email if they fit. Check the name character by character: it is the field most often engraved in a shortened form by mistake.
What is the difference between a stamp and a seal here?
A stamp prints ink. A seal, in the sense of an embosser, raises the paper without ink and is chosen when the mark should not survive a photocopy well. In company law the common seal is a specific instrument, kept and used under the company's own constitution.
What size should it be?
A rectangle of roughly 58 by 22 millimetres holds a company name, a BRN and an address without crowding. A round stamp of 38 to 40 millimetres reads like a seal and suits certificates. Below 30 millimetres, ring text begins to close up. More in the size guide.
Can I put my logo on it?
Yes, and it changes the result more than anything else. Upload the file and the white background is removed, so the logo prints as ink rather than as a white box pasted onto the page.
How much does an online stamp maker cost?
Designing and previewing is free and needs no account. An engraver charges for every correction and takes days; here a correction takes ten seconds.
One warning that applies to every type above: only make the stamp you are entitled to use. Reproducing the mark of a notary, a professional body or a government office without holding that position is not design work, it is forgery, and it is prohibited and prosecuted as such.
This guide describes common commercial practice and is a design tool rather than legal advice. Where the content of a stamp is regulated, which covers notaries, professional bodies and healthcare, what may appear on it is set by the authority that requires the document. Company law questions belong with your company secretary or the Registrar of Companies.
